An angular contact ball bearing can simultaneously support axial forces in one direction and high radial forces.

The raceways of the inner and outer rings are offset in relation to each other in the direction of the bearing axis. The axial load carrying capacity increases with the size of the contact angle. Due to the standard contact angle for single-row angular contact ball bearings of 40°, the bearings can support high axial loads. Contact ball bearings of universal design (suffix U) are intended for fitting in pairs and are normally preloaded (suffix A, L, O). The paired installation in the form of tandem, O- or X-arrangement changes the axial force absorption.

Double row angular contact ball bearings are similar to one-row angular contact ball bearings which are arranged in an O-arrangement, but are narrower to a certain extent. The standard contact angle is 30°. The two-row bearings do not have filling slots in the end faces and are able to simultaneously support radial- and axial loads in both directions.
